Why Jesus Came Into the World

by GAT, written 09/17/2025 updated 09/22/2025

Jesus came into the world for many reasons, among which are the following:

to call sinners to repentance
"I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance" Luke 5:32; see Mat 9:13, Mark 2:17, Rom 3:23.

as an offering for sin
"For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh" Rom 8:3. "You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin" 1John 3:5.

to serve God and man
"just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many" Mat 20:28. Jesus was God's suffering servant spoken of in Isaiah 42:1-9, 49:1-13, 50:4-9, 52:13-53:12

to fulfill the Scriptures, God's promise to send a savior
Jesus assumed the offices of Prophet, Priest and King. "You say correctly that I am a king. For that I have been born; and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth" John 18:37. Jesus became a High Priest of Israel according to the order of Melchizedek (Heb 5:6, 10, 6:20). Jesus was God's Prophet, "For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak" John 12:49. See Gen 3:15, Deu 18:18, Mat 26:56.

to do Gods will
"Jesus said to them, 'My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work' " John 4:34. See John 17:4.

to fulfill the Law
"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill" Mat 5:17. Christ crucified was the end-goal of the law, the repletion of it; see Rom 10:4. By faith one is saved by God's grace (Eph 2:8) in that believing God results in righteousness, a right standing in His presence (Rom 10:10).

to preach the gospel
"Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for" Mark 1:38.

to bear witness to God's faithfulness and salvation
"For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him" John 1:17-18.

to save men
"for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them" Luke 9:56, "to seek and to save that which was lost" Luke 19:10 and "that the world might be saved through Him" John 3:17.

Sacrifice and meal offering You have not desired; My ears You have opened; Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required. Then I said, 'Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart.' I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will not restrain my lips, O LORD, You know. I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great congregation. Psalm 40:6-10 NASB
